The device gets the cool Guest Mode available, the one that allows you to share the slate with your family members, even kids, by controlling beforehand the apps they can access. Aside from the Guest Mode you get new media player applications: Walkman, Album and Movies. They have been redesigned and got new features, including a beautiful visualizer for Walkman, a nice layout for Album and simplistic UI for Movies. HP’s TouchPad and Palm devices are now a thing of the past, but webOS is still alive and kicking, in spite of not actually having devices to run on. Open webOS, that’s the new name of the platform entered beta phase in August and a month later, now, the final stable build is ready for consumption, in version 1.0, that’s shown in action below.
This version provides some opportunities for developers and new capabilities. The team claims that over 75 Open webOS components have been delivered over the past 9 months, for a total of over 450,000 lines of code. This means that Open WebOS can be ported to new devices, thanks to 1.0 release from today. In the video below we see webOS architect Steve Winston doing a demo of the operating system on a HP TouchSmart all in one PC. He says that it took the team only “a couple of days” to port Open WebOS to the PC present in front of him.
The UI isn’t very smooth, but this is version 1.0 after all… Winston imagines various uses for this platform, like kiosk applications in hotels and apparently the OS is made to work on both phones and tablets, plus PCs, so it could become a future all in one solution for kiosk or customer service platforms.
I’m sure you’re as puzzled as I am by the fact that it’s been a month since Apple won the trial against Samsung, but the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was found “innocent”, so to say. Even so, the tablet is still banned, which is not OK, considering the product doesn’t breach any intellectual property. It was only this week that a US appeals court ruled that a lower court should reconsider the ban.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been banned for a while now, at Apple’s request. The injunction was started ahead of the trial between Apple and Samsung and although the Cupertino giant recorded a victory, they didn’t win on account of all devices they had listed. The jury found that Sammy doesn’t violate the patent for tablet design and the South Koreas instantly asked for the ban to be lifted. District Judge Lucy Koh said that she couldn’t do that, because Samsung had already appealed the final decision.
Koh can now reconsider the ban in question and honestly I think it’s a bit too late to worry about the Galaxy Tab 10.1. We’ve got the Galaxy Note 10.1 on the market, while older tablets are getting Android 4.0 ICS or even Jelly Bean, plus the Galaxy Note II is coming, so as long as they don’t ban those, Samsung has enough cash cows.
Everyone’s talking about the iPhone 5 and iOS 6.0 and not on nice terms… Apple Maps is very criticized by both users and experts and Google Maps is a regretted lack from the latest iOS. Tim Cook took the opportunity of the approaching weekend to address the issue and apologize for iOS Maps… Below you can read his full statement.
Among the issues people have found in Apple Maps are the flat points of interest, like the Eiffel Tower, completely flat, or the lack of POIs in some areas, lack of transit features, black/white areas that are uncharted and misplaced towns and POIs. Tom Tom already stated it’s not their fault, since they were working with Apple on this service, so it all fell on the Cupertino giant. What’s interesting is that Tim Cook’s online letter actually mentions alternatives to Apple Maps, stuff like Bing, Nokia’s solutions, Waze, even Google, so they’re fair at least.
The true accomplishments of Apple Maps are turn by turn directions and Flyover, those I agree with, but the rest feels unfinished. I wonder how long it will be till the first major update is rolled out for Maps… In the meantime here’s Cook’s letter:

We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.
We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.
There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.
While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Gigi Chao, the daughter of a Hong Kong billionaire says she had been bombarded with marriage proposals – and even nude photographs – from as far as Nigeria after her father offered £40 million to the man who could woo her.
Gigi Chao, daughter of property tycoon Cecil Chao, entered a civil partnership with her girlfriend of seven years in a ceremony in Paris five months ago.
But Mr Chao, 76, has told the South China Morning Post that reports of his daughter's civil ceremony were "false". He announced the HK$500 million dowry earlier this week.
It has sparked a deluge of offers. Speaking on Thursday Ms Chao, 33, said she had received about 200 proposals and that the number of people following her on Twitter, YouTube and Facebook had jumped by 1,500 since her father's announcement.
"People are contacting me on Facebook, by email, on Twitter. It's ridiculous. I can't sort out the serious proposals from the half-hearted ones. I can't make head or tail of it," she told The Daily Telegraph.
Ms Chao, an executive director of her father's company, Cheuk Nang, said that in addition to receiving enquiries from gentlemen who say they are looking for love and ask her out on a date, she has received some introductions that are less conventional.
Some hopefuls have attached nude photos of themselves or provided information about their financial situations. She has received proposals from all over the world, including Oklahoma, Nigeria, India, Turkey and Bulgaria. Numerous bankers have contacted her.
"Some of them had obviously done their research, you know, gone on my Facebook and looked at my background," she said. "Some of them are quite poetic."
But far from getting angry at her father, she said she was "touched".
"At first I was entertained by it, and then that entertainment turned into the realisation and conviction that I am a really lucky girl to have such a loving daddy, because it's really sweet of him to do something like this as an expression of his fatherly love," she said.
While Ms Chao knew that her father would go public denying the union, she did not know he would offer the reward. "I think the HK$500 million really came as an afterthought."
Even though Mr Chao has not accepted the union, Ms Chao said she loved her father and that they had a good relationship. "It's not that he can't accept me," she said. "It's that he can't accept how society would view me and the status that it would incur. Marriage is still a form of social status. I do understand him. I understand why he's doing this."
She added: "But I don't appreciate getting 1,500 emails."
Ms Chao, who also runs Haut Monde Talent, a model management and PR firm, met her partner, Sean Yeung, who also goes by Sean Eav, while they were working together.
Ms Chao she was drawn to Ms Yeung because she was straightforward, not manipulative, honest, had strong family values and cared about her friends deeply. "I'm very happy when I'm with her," she said.
Ms Chao, who has dated men and women, said she has always been open and honest about her relationships to her family.
However her mother has not accepted her sexuality. Ms Chao recalled that when she told her mother about a relationship with a girl when she was 16 years old, her mother "banged her head against the wall, literally".
Although they have become more visible in recent years, members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in Hong Kong are still largely not accepted by the vast majority of the population.
Ms Chao believes gay rights are picking up, but said work was still needed on the social mentality.
Mr Chao is not so conventional himself. He made headlines in 2003 when his Rolls-Royce caught fire while he and his girlfriend were inside.
The tycoon has never married and once claimed to have had "intimate relations" with about 10,000 women.
CHELSEA remained on top of the Premier League as Juan Mata inspired them to a 2-1 win over London rivals Arsenal yesterday.
Roberto di Matteo’s side are three points clear of second-placed Everton, who maintained their promising form with a 3-1 home win over Southampton.
Unsurprisingly, Chelsea captain John Terry endured taunts from Arsenal fans after this week’s Football Association verdict he was guilty of racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand in a Premier League match last October.
But Terry had the last laugh as visitors Chelsea, unbeaten in the league this season, handed the Gunners their first league defeat of the campaign.
Chelsea took the lead in the 20th minute at the Emirates Stadium when Spain forward Fernando Torres volleyed in Mata’s free-kick.
Arsenal equalised in the 42nd minute when Ivory Coast forward Gervinho turned in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross.
But Mata put the European champions back in front as the Spanish midfielder’s 53rd-minute curling free-kick glanced in off Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny.
“It was a big challenge to play against a quality side like Arsenal,” said Chelsea manager di Matteo.
“Fernando Torres was excellent. It was right to pick John Terry, he showed his leadership again today.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger slammed a poor defensive display that will raise fresh questions about whether the Gunners, without a major trophy in seven years, are genuine title contenders.
“I am deeply disappointed,” the Frenchman said. We gave two cheap goals away. It is unacceptable to give goals like that away in the big games.”
Brendan Rodgers enjoyed his first Premier League win as Liverpool manager, with Luis Suarez scoring his second hat-trick in as many seasons at Carrow Road during a 5-2 win away to Norwich that took the Reds out of the bottom three.
Uruguay striker Suarez needed just two minutes to score and he made it 2-0 in the 38th minute.

The GATE aspiring students will have just five days left to apply online for one of the prestigious examinations in the country.
The online registration for the GATE 2013, which was opened on September 1, will close on September 30.
The Receipt of printed version of ONLINE Application at respective GATE Offices will be available from October 8.
The GATE 2013 results will be announced on March 15, 2013.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering and Technology.
The GATE 2013 is jointly conducted by IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee.
Google today bowed to demands from Brazil to restrict access to a YouTube video that had attacked a mayoral candidate.
"Late last night, we learned that our final legal appeal has been denied and so now we have no choice but to block the video in Brazil," Fabio Coelho, head of Google's Brazil operations, said in a post today. "We are deeply disappointed that we have never had the full opportunity to argue in court that these were legitimate free speech videos and should remain available in Brazil."
The move came a day after Brazilian police arrested Coelho, who was released after agreeing to appear in court at an undetermined date. He was detained after the company declined to remove two videos that a judge said violated laws that limit public criticism of political candidates.
Coelho's post (here's the Portuguese version) said the company had received many complaints and court orders "as usual during an election season," and had "pushed back" on the ones it believed to be invalid under Brazilian law. The arrest warrant was issued, he said, "while we were waiting for that appeal to be heard."
A search on YouTube shows several videos of Alcides Bernal, who is running for mayor of Campo Grande, a city with a population of about 800,000, including one alleging he's hiding documents and another accusing him of money laundering.
Jose Zagallo, head of the Brazilian bar association's commission focusing on information technology law, told the Associated Press that Brazil's laws unfairly hold services like Google liable for content they cannot control.
Coelho said: "Despite all this, we will continue to campaign for free expression globally--not just because it's a key tenet of free societies, but also because more information generally means more choice, more power, more economic opportunity and more freedom for people."
Meanwhile, another Brazilian court is asking Google to remove the controversial "Innocence of Muslims" trailer that has sparked demonstrations across the Middle East. In that case, Google has 10 days to remove the video or face a fine of $5,000 per day.
Google has blocked the poorly made anti-Islam video in Egypt, Libya, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and India. Pakistan's government has banned YouTube altogether because of its refusal to block the clip.
The film's creator, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was arrested today on charges stemming from an earlier 2010 conviction for check fraud. Under the terms of his probation, Nakoula was prohibited from using computers or the Internet.
