Meningitis Angels (MA) commemorate the 4th annual World Meningitis Evening. The national group will host a major international candle lighting ceremony to occur at 5 P. M. worldwide. Frankie Milley, founder and national executive director ask that all who have been affected or lost someone to be able to bacterial meningitis light a candle and let it burn.

Houston Texas – “I are going to be lighting mine in memory associated with my only child Ryan that died from meningococcal disease and all the Meningitis Angels. If we do this worldwide there should be a candle burning somewhere with the next 24 hours, ” Milley said.

Meningococcal disease is a sudden aggressive illness that can bring about death within 24-48 hours in the first symptoms. Survivors may undergo permanent brain damage, learning problems, vision and hearing loss, organ damage and limb loss.
“Before vaccines, thousands of infants and preschoolers died or were left debilitated via Hib and Pneumococcal meningitis. On account of vaccines, these are almost eradicated the united states. However tweens and teens continue to be among the highest risk for meningococcal disease and the hardest to reach for medical and vaccinations. So awareness and vaccination programs like those in Kansas are crucial, ” Milley said.

MA announced today the launch of an national contest that would have tweens and teens ages 10-18 submit a photo of themselves getting their meningitis photo. Those ages 10-17 must use a parent’s permission to enter. A total set of rules for entry could possibly be found at http: //www. meningitis-angels. org/meningitis-angels-vaccination-poster-contest. html “We hope this contest boosts the meningococcal vaccination rate and that is only about 50% nationwide, ” said Milley.

The nationwide events kicked off a week ago in Topeka Kansas. A state resolution declaring April 16-20, Kansas Meningitis Consciousness Week and recognizing World Meningitis Evening was presented to Meningitis Angels, on the capitol steps, by Kansas Senator Vicki Schmidt. Partners for awareness events during the entire week included the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Immunization Program (KDHEIP), a number of county health departments, Dillion Pharmacies, college districts, the Topeka Cruzline, medical providers and others. This was also an important week for the prevention associated with vaccine-preventable disease in infants. The guts for Disease Control (CDC) selected this week for National Newborn Immunization Week.

Milley will shut out the week April twenty six, as a speaker at the Vaccines For Children (VFC) Bi-national Meeting in South Texas. This event is hosted from the Hidalgo County Health Department and definately will host speakers from the CDC, Mexico and the Texas Health Department.

“We should do everything to prevent this deadly disease inside age groups where it is actually preventable. It is the right activity. No infant, child or adult should pass away or be left debilitated from a vaccine-preventable disease, especially one seeing that deadly as meningitis, ” concluded Milley.
